Curriculum Statement

We aim that by ‘Working together to meet the needs of all our children’ they become lifelong learners, ready for the next stage in their education and they achieve our school values of: Respectful, Determined and Proud. The aim of Millfield is to provide opportunities for children to develop their character and have high aspirations; children will know how to make a positive contribution to their community and the wider society. Self-confidence, independence and risk-taking is encouraged through the embedding of our PROUD Positive Learning Behaviours: Perseverance, Resilience, On-Task, Understanding and Dedicated.  The delivery of the curriculum is underpinned by our values.

Millfield School will encourage children to be responsible, make up their own minds and grow through making their own choices. They will be respectful and honest with themselves and with others. The Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural education of children is cross-curricular with quality texts at the centre of the planning.  Many ‘first hand’ experiences provide children with a range of opportunities, which complement our curriculum. The School Council consists of children elected from each class in KS1 and 2 and provides a forum for pupils to contribute to the decision-making process in the school. Aspects of personal, social and health education and religious education within the curriculum provide pupils with opportunities to develop spiritually and morally in a supportive atmosphere. Spiritual and moral themes are also explored in regular whole-school and class assemblies. The school ensures that children are aware and are becoming prepared for life in modern Britain.

Millfield provides a highly inclusive environment where learners enjoy their education.  Pupils at all levels are helped to achieve their potential. Those who are highly able are challenged and supported through appropriately pitched teaching. Those who find learning more challenging are encouraged and given targeted support to embed skills, to develop at their own pace or simply to learn in a style that best suits their individual needs. We promote the Cognitive Load Theory, which reinforces the importance of ‘over learning’ to secure understanding. The curriculum is successfully adapted, designed and developed to be ambitious to meet the needs of pupils with SEND; developing their knowledge, skills and abilities to apply what they know and can do with increasing independence. The foundation of our curriculum provides pastoral care; aiding children’s readiness to learn and for children to develop appropriate life skills.

Millfield’s focus on curriculum development is carefully designed to ensure coverage and progression. It provides pupils with memorable experiences, in addition to diverse and rich opportunities from which children can learn and develop a range of transferable skills.  The children's own community, its heritage and traditions are used as a starting point for engaging interest. A primary focus of our curriculum is to raise aspirations and the desire to learn. Promoting resilience and enabling children to feel proud of themselves are fundamental factors; as a school value and an acronym for positive learning behaviours, feeling ‘PROUD’ is a central part of school life.

Millfield utilises the outside environment to engage, motivate and stimulate children’s learning and ideas. Our school yurt, pond and wildlife areas are central in providing these opportunities for children. This has promoted cross-curricular learning which our children have responded to with passion and curiosity.

Music has a high profile at Millfield. We have a specialist teacher who leads tailored sessions for individuals, groups, classes and the whole school. Musical opportunities are extensive, these consist of playing different instruments, such as the: ukulele, guitar, recorder and keyboard, as well as the teaching of singing and percussion instruments.  Giving music a focus across the school has engaged many children including children with SEND. 

The school provides the full core offer of extended school provision. To promote physical health and wellbeing, a range of clubs gives learners opportunities to access a wide variety of sports clubs after school hours and during lunch times. High quality visits and visitors into school enhance the curriculum and provide opportunities for writing for a purpose.

A house system has been established as part of Millfield’s structure; it provides opportunities for team work and collaboration, as well as working with a range of ages and abilities. This system supports opportunities for competitive games and also reinforces the importance of sportsmanship.

Faculties play an important part in the success of the curriculum by leading a regular programme of monitoring, evaluation and review. This structure provides a strong foundation and opportunities for staff to collaboratively work together. Faculties design and implement inspirational days throughout the year to promote cross curricular learning in engaging, memorable and practical methods.

This curriculum design ensures that the needs of all children are met within the environment of high quality teaching and learning, supported by targeted, proven interventions where appropriate. There is a positive impact on children’s outcomes due to Millfield’s diverse curriculum.  Enjoyment of the curriculum promotes achievement, confidence and good behaviour. Children feel safe to try new things.
