Live session 10:30am via Google Classroom
The last day is here! We are super excited to see you all at 10:30am on Google Classroom for our live cook-along lesson. Don't forget to bring your banana, melted chocolate and sprinkles! We will also be posting a video on this page with a message from all your Year 1 teachers later today.
Here is a link to the banana ice lollies if you would like to make them at a later date.
Today, we have a tangram puzzle challenge for you all to try. Each tangram consists of 7 flat pieces. There are 2 large triangles, 2 small triangles and medium triangle, a square and a parallelogram. The goal is to put these 7 pieces together to make a shape.
The three main rules are: use all 7 pieces, the 7 pieces must not overlap and they must all touch! Good luck with your building; we'd love to see some pictures of your finished shapes.
Join Mrs Lewis and Mrs Franks at 2pm on Tuesday 20th July for a pirate treasure hunt! We will be streaming live on Google Classrooms. A link and reminder of how to sign in has been sent to your email. If you have any questions, please give us an email!
Captain Lewis Scallywag and Captain Franks Rattlebones
Olive and Elm classes enjoyed a very special virtual visit to a Garden Centre today! Jack and Sarah from Harlow Garden Centre took us on a tour and showed us the goods-in warehouse and lots of the plant display areas such as the evergreen trees and rose bushes! They also taught us words such as 'chlorophyll' (affects the colour of the plant) and 'variegated' (leaf with more than one colour). We loved hearing all about what Jack and Sarah do each day at the garden centre and how they take care of all the plants. Thank you!

Science Week- Inventing Paint Colours!
It's Science Week at Millfield and our topic is Inventions! Our first invention in Year One was to use natural materials to create pigments to make our own paint colours. We planned which colours we wanted to make and select natural materials such as petals and leaves to help us make them!
Mrs Franks will be taking part in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch this weekend. Use these resources if you would like to get involved! You can also use the link below to find out more and to submit your results.
I arrived at school this morning feeling excited about the day ahead.
As I opened my office door, I saw that something had been left on my desk. I was curious to find out what it was! As I got closer, I could see a note on the front explaining that Year 1 children (within the Year 1 bubble) had created a non-fiction book all about penguins and I was lucky enough to be able to read it!
I then heard a ping and looked at my emails to see that I had received an email from Mrs Franks sharing a non-fiction e-book that had been created by using the penguin reports that children had completed at home!
Thank you so very much - what a treat for me!
I am so impressed with all your hard work to create such amazing non-fiction reports all about penguins - one of my favourite animals! The information that you have carefully written, as well as the labelled images have helped me to understand more about penguins. The book is full of fantastic topical terminology that I have thoroughly enjoyed reading. I particularly like the 'Did you know...?' questions which was a very clever way of sharing information.
Did you know that the Emperor Penguin is the tallest of all penguin species, reaching as tall as 120cm in height? How tall are you? Are you shorter or taller than an Emperor Penguin?
Thank you again for sharing your very impressive learning.

This week, we have been imagining what winter would be like were it human. We drew an image of winter as a person and then wrote sentences to describe them. We were inspired by the poem 'Seasons' by Valerie Bloom. An excellent job from Harry, Alfie, Rose, Isabelle, Brodie and Daniel on their winter poems!

Junk Model Buildings
We were inspired by the building work at Millfield and spent Tuesday morning designing and building our own cardboard houses. We thought about the features of a house and what they definitely needed and then got to work building them out of junk modelling materials.

We have been writing our own version of Julia Donaldson's 'The Snail and the Whale' in Year One this week. Well done to Jack C who worked extremely hard on his sentence structure and also passed his spelling target this week!

Well done to Hayden in Elm class who used rhyming words to write a great poem this week.
We were inspired by the poem 'The Treasures' by Clare Bevan.
Well done to Sydney in Olive Class who chose some brilliant adjectives and animals to add to her rhyming couplets poem.
Year One Classroom Layout
In Year One, we have been working on making some reasonable adjustments to our classrooms to help us to support children in their learning.
We have created a carpet area in both classrooms, which will allow for more engaged and age appropriate teacher input. Children will be sat in lines facing forward on the carpet and will remain with their line as they transition to the tables.
The tables have been laid out in a way that ensures that no child is face to face with another child. Please see below for a few photos that show the changes we have made in Elm and Olive classrooms.
Thank you for your continued support and understanding.
Best wishes from the Year One Team
