Our Mission

Inclusion at Millfield First & Nursery School

Our Mission

The curriculum we offer at Millfield recognises children’s prior learning, provides first hand learning experiences and allows the children to develop interpersonal skills, building resilience and developing creative, critical thinkers.  The ability to learn is underpinned by the teaching of basic skills, knowledge, concepts and values. We constantly provide enhancement opportunities to engage learning and aim to nurture happy, investigative and enquiring children with a thirst and curiosity for new experience and knowledge.

At Millfield we believe that all children can make progress and achieve through High Quality Teaching.  A high quality, broad, balanced and inclusive curriculum will enable them to reach their full potential. We view every child as an individual, with their own preferred ways of learning and working and aim to support them as such. Some of our children have particular needs which may present a barrier to their learning or ability to fully access the curriculum. This difficulty may relate to a learning difficulty, which may be either general or specific, or it may be a physical or emotional difficulty. Our approach is to actively monitor all children so that any difficulties are identified early and provision made to enable them to make good progress. We adopt a graduated approach to our provision, ensuring that we assess, plan, do and review.

We do this by:

  • Ensuring training is refreshed and/or instigated for all staff so that they have the skills and knowledge necessary to support all children with SEND.
  • Ensuring that are organised in the best way possible to support every child and those with additional needs.
  • Recognising that additional mental effort to process cognitive and social learning is made by some children both in class and at play and that they may need rest breaks/sensory breaks/mindful times to support this need.
  • Working alongside parents and external professional advisors to understand need and barriers to learning and what can be put in place to lower the barriers and allow access to all areas of school life.
