About the Role

We are looking for a warm, approachable and highly motivated Family Support Worker to join our First School community. This is a key pastoral role focused on nurturing our youngest learners (ages 2–9 years old) and supporting their families to help every child flourish both socially and academically.

Millfield is a school that offers a positive, nurturing and caring ethos with happy, well-motivated children who are excited about their learning.

As part of our Inclusion Team, you will build strong relationships with parents and carers, offer early help and targeted support, and work closely with staff to promote the wellbeing, safety and success of all children.

This role also includes responsibilities as a Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) and supporting the school’s Therapeutic Thinking approach to behaviour. Full, relevant CPD and safeguarding training will be provided.

Key Responsibilities

Family Support

  • Provide early help, advice and emotional support to families of children.
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with parents/carers, encouraging open communication.
  • Offer guidance on routines, behaviour, child development, attendance and home–school consistency.
  • Support families during times of transition (e.g., starting school, moving year groups).
  • Develop tailored family support plans and monitor progress.
  • Signpost and liaise with external services and community agencies.

Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead

  • Work closely with the Designated Safeguarding Lead Team to respond to safeguarding concerns.
  • Act as a point of contact for children, parents and staff regarding safeguarding matters.
  • Maintain accurate, secure and up-to-date safeguarding records.
  • Attend and contribute to multi-agency meetings (e.g., Early Help, CIN, CP).
  • Promote a strong safeguarding culture across the school.
  • Take on DSL responsibilities when required.

Therapeutic Thinking & Behaviour Support

  • Model and promote our school’s Therapeutic Thinking and trauma‑informed behaviour approach.
  • Help children understand and manage big emotions using age-appropriate strategies.
  • Support staff in developing consistent, nurturing and relational responses to behaviour.
  • Assist with personalised behaviour or emotional-regulation plans for children.
  • Work with families to reinforce therapeutic strategies at home.

Inclusive Practice & Team Collaboration

  • Work closely with colleagues across the school team, including the SENDCo, Teachers and Teaching Assistants, as well as external professionals.
  • Support children with a range of social, emotional and additional needs to help them access learning.
  • Contribute to inclusion meetings, staff briefings and training, and school improvement initiatives.
  • Opportunity to undertake and develop Mental Health Lead role, including wellbeing across the whole school.
  • Opportunity to support the Millfield community by potentially developing in the role of a school therapy dog handler.

About You

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has experience working with young children and/or families (ideally in a school or community setting).
  • Understands early childhood development and the challenges young families may face.
  • Is calm, nurturing and able to build strong relationships with children.
  • Has a good understanding of safeguarding and multi-agency processes.
  • Is confident in supporting behaviour using therapeutic, relational strategies.
  • Is approachable, professional and able to maintain confidentiality.
  • Communicates clearly and sensitively with families from diverse backgrounds.
  • Holds a relevant qualification (e.g. childcare, social care, education, youth/family work) or equivalent experience.

What We Offer

  • Full training for the Deputy DSL role.
  • Comprehensive CPD, including Therapeutic Thinking and early years/primary-specific training.
  • A supportive, friendly and inclusive school community.
  • Opportunities to make a real difference to the lives of young children and their families.

School Governor

Join Us as a School Governor
We are looking for enthusiastic and committed volunteers to join our Governing Body and help support the strategic direction of our school. Governors play a vital role in ensuring the best possible education for all children by contributing to decision‑making, supporting school leaders, and bringing a range of skills and experiences to the team.

Who can apply?
We welcome applications from parents, carers and members of the local community. You don’t need to have experience in education, just a willingness to learn, ask questions and work as part of a team. A diverse range of backgrounds, skills and perspectives strengthens our governing body and helps us represent our whole community.

What does the role involve?

  • Attending approximately six meetings a year
  • Helping shape the school’s vision and strategic priorities
  • Supporting and challenging school leaders
  • Undertaking training to build your skills

Why volunteer?
Becoming a governor is a rewarding way to make a real difference in children’s education, develop your own skills and contribute to our school’s future.

Interested?
If you would like to find out more or apply, please contact the school office. We’d be delighted to hear from you.
